The contest was held to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. It was also in conjunction to the annual conference against FGM, Female Genital Mutilation.

The conference was organised to raise awareness within Ireland, as every year, 3 million young girls are at risk of suffering from Female Genital Mutilation. The Department of Health and Children have published the Criminal Justice (Female Genital Mutilation) Bill 2011 in order for this brutal practice to be criminalised in Ireland and for anyone who is involved in it to be punished.
